Istanbul Pain Center

Pain is Not a Destiny!

TIhe important aspect is not alleviating the pain within a short period, but knowing the ways to cope with pain throughout life. Istanbul Pain Center educates its patients individually, organizes courses from time to time, and publishes booklets and brochures related to patient education.

Alongside serving its patients, Istanbul Pain Center also provides educational services to increase the knowledge and experience of our colleagues from our country and abroad. Our young colleagues from both domestic and international locations come to our center to observe our practices and enhance their knowledge during patient evaluations.

It's a prerequisite within the general moral rules of medicine that patients are examined without compromising scientific values to reach a conclusion. This is only possible with the honesty of each field staying limited within its boundaries. It's not sufficient for the patient to be treated only under the physician's supervision. Real success can be achieved by educating the patient about the pain they are experiencing, teaching them methods to cope with their pain, and informing them about the medications they use. Istanbul Pain Center was established in 2000 by Prof. Dr. Serdar Erdine with these goals in mind.

With the increase in transportation and communication facilities, the world has now become a whole. Sharing advanced technological facilities has enabled the accumulation of knowledge to serve all of humanity. Now, patients can access information about their ailments and treatment methods within an incredible network of information in a very short time. Now there's a new patient profile that questions, researches, and shares treatment methods. Medicine also needs to adapt to this development, sharing patients' complaints and treatment methods.

Although there are positive aspects of medicine benefiting more from scientific and technological facilities, negative sides also emerge. The industrialization of medicine provides new treatment opportunities, yet on the other hand, issues of excessive and misuse arise. A medical order, which relies solely on imaging methods and laboratory examinations, relegating the patient's clinic to the background, thereby bringing unnecessary treatments and surgeries to the agenda, is increasingly being complained about. This further shakes the trust of patients in physicians and the medical system every passing day. Because in the end, treatments are organized according to images, surgeries are performed. However, what's important is the evaluation of imaging methods, laboratory findings, and other examinations together with the patient's clinic and ensuring that clinical findings are compatible with examination methods. In other words, patients need to be evaluated one-on-one, examined, while benefiting from examination methods in the meantime. Because there is a feature that separates medicine from other positive science branches. Medicine itself emerges not as a simple positive science, but as an art that benefits from positive sciences.

Pursuing Their Work In Light Of These Principles.

Upon arriving at our center, patients are welcomed by our staff, initially having a preliminary discussion with a specialist doctor before being evaluated by Prof. Dr. Serdar Erdine. After the diagnosis is made, detailed information regarding both the disease and the contemplated treatment methods is provided to the patient and their relatives. At this point, the benefits, harms, potential impacts, and side effects of the treatment methods to be applied are thoroughly explained before obtaining the consent of the patient and their relatives. Predominantly focusing on interventional methods, our center proceeds to treatment after a three to four-hour fasting period for our patients. Patients who have undergone treatment are reviewed a week later, and again one and two months afterwards. Besides obtaining all relevant medical information in writing, it is also stored digitally. Our center's archive of over 20 years of patient records is scientifically maintained, and applied treatment methods are statistically evaluated and shared with our colleagues in the scientific community.

Pain is a Treatable Disease.

Pain is multidisciplinary, meaning it requires evaluation by a team. Chronic pain is a disease in itself and should be treated as such. The primary medical fields dealing with chronic pain include Algology, Anesthesiology, Neurology, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology, and Spine Surgery, Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology. Alongside specialists in Algology and Anesthesiology working within our center, we also have a consultation team who operate independently but have achieved significant reputation in their respective fields, providing their services to us.

The Istanbul Pain Center has been recognized as one of the Best Centers operating in Multidisciplinary Field – awarded the Centre of Excellence on Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Pain Practice accolade by the World Institute of Pain after a thorough evaluation. Considering pain merely as a symptom, identifying its cause, and reducing or eliminating its intensity at that moment is not adequate treatment. This approach will not lessen the risk of pain recurrence in a few months, nor will it prevent the increase of anxiety and hopelessness in individuals if the pain does recur. The aim in treatment is to increase the individual’s functionality after eliminating the pain through the use of various methods, and to reinforce this improvement through education. Patients should be explained the cause of their pain in the simplest language possible. They should be taught the elements to embrace and avoid during the rest of their lives, and methods to cope with their pains on their own.
